Symposium dedicated to the 70th anniversary
of JINR held in China
The JINR delegation and representatives of the Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) took part in the Symposium. JINR was represented by Deputy Chief Scientific Secretary Alexey Zhemchugov, Deputy Head of the Department of International Cooperation Elena Badawi, as well as Head of the JINR Historical Archive, a researcher at the Museum of History of Science and Technology Elena Malaya.
The Symposium was opened by Professor Liu Jinyan (IHNS, CAS) that expressed hope for strengthening cooperation between JINR and Chinese research centres in the future. Afterwards, the speeches of Heads of three Institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the PRC were given: Deputy Director of IHNS Guan Xiaou, Director of the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP CAS) Cao Jun and Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITP CAS) Zhou Shanggui.
Alexey Zhemchugov presented to the participants an essay on the history of the Joint Institute. Academician Zhao Hongwei shared personal memories of his work in FLNR in 1992-1995, accompanying them with an extended story about JINR's cooperation with the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP CAS) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The organizer of the Symposium Professor Liu Jinyan demonstrated a documentary consisting of a series of interviews with Chinese scientists that worked in Dubna.
The guest of honor of the Symposium was the daughter of the outstanding Chinese physicist Wang Ganchang that worked in Dubna from 1956 to 1960 and from 1959 to 1960, served as Vice Director of the Institute. It was Wang Ganchang's scientific group in 1960 that discovered a new particle on the synchrophasotron - anti‑sigma‑minus‑hyperon. The scientist's daughter Wang Zunming and his granddaughter Li Moyan donated an album to the JINR Historical Archive with unique photographs taken during Wang Ganchang's two trips to Dubna: in the 1950s and in 1989. The JINR delegation presented a counter gift, passing the pictures of the scientist and his group from the archive of the Institute to the Chinese party. The family was also presented with a copy of the protocol of the 1959 JINR Committee of Plenipotentiaries, at which Van Ganchan was elected Vice Director and a watercolor depicting a synchrophasotron by Dubna artist Natalya Kotomina.
After the Symposium, Wang Ganchang's family shared personal memories of the scientist and the possibility of translating and publishing books in Russian about the life and work of Chinese scientists in Dubna that were transferred to the JINR delegation, was also discussed.
