JINR experience for the representatives
of science and education
The event was attended by representatives of scientific and educational organizations and specialized departments from Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Russia and South Africa.
At the closing ceremony of the Internship, an agreement of intent was signed between the Samara University named after S. P. Korolev and the Joint Institute on the opening of the JINR Information Centre on the basis of the University.
The JEMS programme was developed in order to give participants a comprehensive understanding of the research base, international cooperation, educational initiatives and social infrastructure of the Institute in an intensive five‑day format.
This time, representatives of 12 scientific and educational institutions and national departments took part in the Internship.
- Vietnam: Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), VAST Institute of Biology, Hanoi National University of Education (HNUE), Thai Nguyen University (TNU).
- Kazakhstan: Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy.
- Russia: Samara National Research University named after Academician S. P. Korolev (Samara University), North Ossetian State University named after K. L. Khetagurov (NOSU).
- South Africa: South Africa National Research Foundation (NRF), Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Stellenbosch University (SU), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Sefako Makgato University of Health Sciences (SMU).
On 25 May, at the opening of the event, Director of the JINR University Centre Dmitry Kamanin addressed the participants with a welcoming speech. He emphasized that 2026 is marked for the Joint Institute with important dates: JINR celebrates the 70th anniversary of its founding and UC celebrates its 35th anniversary.
"You came to Dubna at a unique and eventful time. Right now, when we have passed the stage of physical launch of the NICA Collider, a multipurpose MPD detector is preparing to take its place at the site of the Accelerator Complex. JINR Laboratories also implement a programme of fundamental and applied research in the most promising areas of modern science. Be prepared to learn a lot of new and interesting things in order to share your experience and knowledge with your colleagues about the possibilities of cooperation with our Institute," Dmitry Kamanin said.
JINR Chief Scientific Secretary Sergey Nedelko welcomed the participants on behalf of Directorate of the Joint Institute and opened the Internship with an overview report on the large research infrastructure and prospects for the development of JINR as an international intergovernmental organization. A lecture on the history of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was given by Deputy Chief Scientific Secretary Alexey Zhemchugov. During the week, participants have visited all seven Laboratories of the Institute, have learnt about the basic facilities and listened to lectures on flagship research. In addition, a number of meetings were held with Directorate of the Institute, leading experts and representatives of national groups working in JINR.
The final event of the JEMS programme was the final round table. The participants shared their impressions of the event and the activities of JINR as a whole.
The representatives of Vietnamese organizations expressed interest in expanding cooperation with the Joint Institute in the field of education. Pham Van Hai, Head of the Department of Solid‑State Physics and Electronics at HNUE, stated that one of the priority tasks for universities in Vietnam is to develop joint programmes of academic mobility with JINR. "It is extremely important for us to involve JINR scientists in working with our students," he highlighted. "It will allow us to grow a new generation of strong researchers that will develop science in Vietnam."
For the delegation of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan on atomic energy, the key aspect of the Internship was the investigation of the successful experience of JINR. "Currently, Kazakhstan is going to develop its own science cities and major development of research infrastructure will be carried out. Therefore, the model of integration of science and the urban environment that has been successfully implemented in Dubna, is of particular practical interest to us," a chief consultant at the Agency's Department of Science and Innovation Adilet Ahmet said. In turn, Deputy Director of the Strategic Planning Department Toizhan Nuranova highly appreciated JINR's approaches to strategic planning.
South African representatives focused on innovation, technology transfer and training. TUT Deputy Provost for Research, Innovation and Engagement Watiswa Papu‑Zamshaka pointed to the urgent need for South African universities to commercialise their developments. "South African universities build many promising prototypes but we face difficulties in bringing them to the real market. In this sense, Dubna's experience, where the Institute successfully cooperates with many partners, is really important for us," she said. JINR was praised by NRF Executive Director of Finance Bishen Singh, calling the Institute a real "driver of science" and a "bridge of international cooperation".
Significant prospects for joint work were also outlined by participants from Russia. In particular, Head of the Department of Nanoengineering at Samara University named after S. P. Korolev Vladimir Paveliev expressed interest in developing cooperation in the field of materials science and functional materials.
One of the results of the event was the signing of an agreement of intent between the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and Samara University. The parties will significantly expand cooperation in organizing joint scientific research and training highly qualified personnel. In addition, an important part of the partnership will be the active popularization of scientific knowledge, career guidance and the expansion of international relations.
The JINR Information Centre will become a development tool that will play the role of a new point of attraction for talented youth and contribute to the increase of natural sciences in the region. "We hope that the Information Centre will open this year and will help to implement our major plans to expand international cooperation," Vice‑Rector for Research at Samara University Anna Rosenzweig commented.
At the end of the round table, a solemn ceremony of awarding certificates of completion of the 29th JEMS International Internship was held.
