JINR scientist became the hero
of a major photo project

On 3 June, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), the fifth season of the exhibition “Science in Faces” that is held within the framework of the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia was opened.

The topic of this year's exposition is "Scientists are the new rock stars". The heroes of the exhibition were 32 young researchers from 15 regions of the Russian Federation, whose discoveries and high‑tech developments were awarded prestigious prizes in the field of science. Among the project participants is Mikhail Shandov, a senior researcher at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics, a Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

In 2025, the scientific staff with the head of Mikhail Shandov was awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology for young scientists for developing software for the NICA Accelerator Complex. Scientists developed a mathematical model of the magnetic and optical structure of the facility, estimated the effect of magnetic field errors in the booster synchrotron (booster) on the dynamics of the circulating and accelerated beam, calculated the main properties of the magnetic fields of the correcting magnets of the leading field, as well as carried out experimental research of the properties of the magnetic structure of the booster that allowed achieving compliance of the measurement results with the predictions of mathematical modeling at the level of 10% accuracy. For the first time, dynamic correction of a closed orbit was implemented over the entire range of operating energies of the facility.

Based on the research results, a 2D analytical prototype of the correcting magnet was developed that allows calculating the required operating current in the windings depending on the required magnetic field value at the level of accuracy of 5%. Flexible algorithms for correcting the closed orbit of the beam have been developed, taking into account possible restrictions on the operation of the correction system devices. Based on the developed algorithms, the scientists have prepared software that allows one to control the correction system of the booster's leading magnetic field in an automatic mode. The results show the possibility of applying these approaches in the future for synchrotrons and beam transport channels of the NICA Accelerator Complex, as well as other accelerators of this type.

During the year, portraits of young scientists will be seen by visitors to the largest public spaces in Moscow:

  • VDNH (8 June - 12 July);
  • Sokolniki Park (13 July – 16 August);
  • Central Park of Culture and Rest named after Maxim Gorky (17 August – 9 September);
  • Moscow Metro station "Vystavochnaya" (13 July – 26 August);
  • Moscow Metro station "Dynamo" (27 August – 10 September).

The exhibition will also be presented at the sites of federal universities in the regions of Russia (from 1 July to 30 October). The heroes of the project will hold lectures for students and take part in scientific events. "Science in Faces" will end the season at the 6th Congress of Young Scientists that will be held on 25‑27 November on the federal territory of “Sirius”.
