Alliances of researchers are born on the shore of Lake Baikal
The organizers of the School are the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and Irkutsk State University (ISU). For the second year, the School is sponsored by ANO “STC “TEACHIN” for students of Moscow State University and School lecturers.
This year, 99 students from Russia, China, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Rwanda took part in the School. The participants were waiting for a rich programme: lectures, student reports and poster sessions, scientific discussions, projects under the supervision of curators. The School's lecturers this year were: Dmitry Naumov (JINR), Dmitry Gorbunov (INR RAS), Sergey Troitsky (INR RAS), Grigory Safronov (INR RAS), Emil Akhmedov (MIPT, ITEP), Andrey Sheshukov (JINR), Liangjian Wen (IHEP, China), Junting Huang (SJTU, China), Zhi‑zhong Xing (IHEP, China), Dmitry Bylinkin (MIPT), Dmitry Karlovets (ITMO University), Maxim Barkov (INASAN), Evgeny Derishev (IAP RAS) and Elena Nokhrina (LPI). The topics of the lectures were diverse: cosmology, introduction to particle physics, stars and new physics, gravity, black holes, UHE neutrino telescopes, modeling software, neutrino physics, vortex states, others.
"The Baikal School is not just a series of lectures in a certain place. This is a full-fledged scientific and educational environment where students and young researchers listen to leading specialists, discuss the real tasks of modern physics, work on projects in groups and present their own results. It is important that the School unites particle physics, neutrino physics, astrophysics, cosmology, data modeling and data analysis techniques. It is this kind of interdisciplinary training that is needed today to participate in large scientific experiments.
Also, the Baikal School is a school of life, where young people see the attitude to science on the part of older comrades. Sometimes, this is more valuable than direct knowledge that can be obtained in a week," DLNP Deputy Director, Co‑Chairman of the School Organizing Committee Dmitry Naumov shared his vision.
"The School turned out to be surprisingly easy this year - there have been minimal transport and technical issues. I think such schools are very important. Over the years of organization, I have seen more than once how the School changed the fate of students. It was here, on the shore of Lake Baikal, that unions of young researchers and experienced scientific leaders were born that opened the doors for children to the best scientific centres around the world. But the most amazing thing is the aftertaste. Arriving at a scientific organization thousands of kilometers from home, you suddenly meet a colleague and understand: he is also "ours", a Baikal schoolboy. We are all forever united by an invisible, but very strong thread of common memories," Co‑Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the International Baikal School on Physics of Elementary Particles and Astrophysics Irina Perevalova said.
For reference.The Baikal Summer School on Physics of Elementary Particles and Astrophysics was established jointly by Irkutsk State University and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research under a cooperation agreement. The main task of the School is to educate and train students, graduate students and young scientists in modern aspects of particle physics and astrophysics by leading physicists and theorists, as well as to establish a contact base and to choose the research area by young specialists.
