Nuclear power is the future

On 26 June, the 4th International Youth Forum "Obninsk NEW 2026" was held in Obninsk. The event brought together more than 700 participants from 85 countries.

One of the central events of the Forum was the plenary session "Nuclear energy for the future of mankind: cooperation, technology, development," moderated by JINR Director Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Grigory Trubnikov.

“Obninsk NEW” is dedicated to the nuclear technologies of the future, including new materials and energy systems. The event was organized with the support of Rosatom State Corporation, the Government of the Kaluga Region and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (NRNU MEPhI).

The Forum programme included youth and expert discussions on the importance of professional communities in the development of the global nuclear industry, the prospects for international educational projects and new areas of technological cooperation. One of the key topics was the development of the International Scientific and Educational Centre “Obninsk Tech”. On 26 June, Rosatom State Corporation and the Rosatom Technical Academy signed an agreement aimed at developing the project in future.

At the opening, the participants were addressed by Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi and Director General of the World Nuclear Association (WNA) Sama Bilbao i Leon.

The plenary session "Nuclear energy for the future of mankind: cooperation, technology, development" was held in the conference hall of the Rosatom Technical Academy. Together with Grigory Trubnikov, it was attended by Deputy Director General of the IAEA, Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy Mikhail Chudakov, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation Alexey Likhachev, Governor of the Kaluga Region Vladislav Shapsha, Chairman of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy Almasadam Satkaliev, Director of the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan ("Uzatom") Azim Akhmedhodjaev, Energy Advisor to the President of Rwanda, Chairman of the National Atomic Energy Council Lassina Zerbo.

Opening the meeting, Grigory Trubnikov emphasized the special importance of Obninsk as the city of the world's first nuclear power plant and the first science city of the Russian Federation. According to him, the annual forum made Obninsk one of the centres of attraction for youth nuclear science.

The discussion focused on issues related to the openness of international cooperation, global competition and technological leadership in the nuclear industry, as well as the competencies that are most in demand among young specialists in the new conditions.

Summing up the session, Grigory Trubnikov focused on the need to develop uniform approaches to the development of territories, on the basis of which new centres of nuclear technologies and personnel training can be developed. He also highlighted the high potential of fundamental and applied research, their direct relation to the social and economic development of the regions. "Nuclear science and nuclear power develop the culture of international partnership. In many respects, it is for energy and technologies - the future of mankind," JINR Director emphasized.
