JINR employees in the image of media people

On 17 September, a photo exhibition opened at Dubna University that presented Dubna scientists from an unexpected angle. Photographer Alexander Baidatsky decided to look at them as heroes of magazine covers. The photo exhibition shows what came of it.

Beautiful, funny, bright, young and very attractive faces - these are the scientists at the photo exhibition. This image breaks stereotypes about people doing science. For some reason, it still seems to us that scientists must be very serious and elderly.

"If you imagine that these are people from the Forbes list, famous artists or media people - in general, the heroes of the covers of glossy magazines, I would photograph them that way. It was interesting for me to look at scientists from this angle," the author of the photographs Alexander Baidatsky says.

But the "trick" is that scientists whose portraits are presented at the exhibition are really media people - they all teach at the University Centre that means they are popularizers of science. Among them are many graduates and teachers of Dubna University. Some heroes of the photo project are famous for exciting scientific lectures and experiments for children.

The heroes of the exhibition came to the opening and told what gives scientists the popularization of science. "It is children who often ask unexpected questions during lectures and excursions," an employee at MLIT Igor Pelevanyuk says. “For example: "Why do you need your Laboratory of Information Technologies and why all these calculations cannot be carried out in a smartphone?"

Popularization of science can be a source of inspiration for scientists. "It's impressive when you tell schoolchildren about science in Rostov‑on‑Don and then you meet these students in Dubna and it turns out that they are already biophysics students at Dubna University," a researcher at the Laboratory of Radiation Biology Yury Severyukhin is sharing his personal experience.

The opening of the photo exhibition "Dubna scientists in the lens of Alexander Baidatsky" was an opportunity not only to see today's scientists, but also to communicate with popularizers of science. These are people who are able to look at the world in unexpected ways and to see much more than we do.

For example, considering a photo exhibition with portraits of scientists, a researcher at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics Dmitry Dryablov described it as follows, "Here are accelerators and the evolution of the Universe and radiobiology and space exploration and neutrino physics." He, of course, had in mind the research areas that these scientists are engaged in. And yet, to see so many people in the faces, you need to be not a banal person.
