About what the newspaper wrote that day 16 years agoNo. 51 (3990), 25 December, 2009 In his New Year's address to employees, JINR Director Alexey Sisakyan said, "Overcoming life's hardships, both our city and the Joint Institute are still in their dynamic development. The basic facilities of the Institute are improved and reconstructed, more and more young people come to laboratories. The JINR Seven-Year Development Plan has been approved and adopted by all Member States of our reputable international scientific centre. Our cooperation with leading research centres of the world is becoming closer and more extensive. Dubna is becoming a real model of innovative development, dominated by the triad of knowledge "science - education - innovation"! All it gives us good reason to look to the future with confidence." *** On 18 December, JINR celebrated 60 years since the establishment of the first laboratory of the Institute - DLNP and its first basic facility - the phasotron. Anniversary events began with the opening of the monument to I.V.Kurchatov near building No.1 of DLNP. Academician-Secretary of the Department of Physical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.A.Matveev conveyed the warmest congratulations from the Academy, "The event, the anniversary of which we are celebrating, is important not only for Dubna, but for the whole of Russia. The physics of the core began here. You make up the glory of our science and the accelerator constructed for basic research has not become just history. Today, new techniques of nuclear physics are developing here."
Opening of the monument to I.V.Kurchatov near building No.1 of DLNP *** The Italy-Russia round table "Achievements in basic research, applied science and technology, business development", organized by the Italian Embassy in the Russian Federation and JINR was held at the International Conference Centre. Fifty participants in the round table represented Italian and Russian science in equal parts. Reputable scientists, heads of scientific institutes, representatives of ministries and diplomats of the two countries discussed the results of cooperation between Russia and Italy in all areas of science that feed high technologies. The third party represented at the meeting was JINR, whose merits make up a separate, significant and capacious page of this cooperation. The range of scientific reports and speeches was very wide, they were dedicated to topical problems of physics, joint experiments and theoretical research at JINR, INFN and CERN, the development of basic facilities of the Joint Institute and grid technologies... *** The next (traditionally New Year's Eve), 40th session of the nuclotron accelerator complex was held in VBLHEP. It was preceded by intense preparatory work, started almost immediately after the completion of the 39th session. By the beginning of the session, the installation of equipment was completed and the automatic control system for the vacuum equipment of the nuclotron beam chamber, developed in close cooperation with Czech companies (Vacuum Praha, FOTON) was tested. Head of the scientific department of A.V.Butenko, chief engineer of the facility H.Khojibagiyan, "Physicists that have been waiting for a session on the nuclotron for a long time are quite satisfied with its results. This time, during one session, we accelerated deuterons and lithium nuclei. This is a completely unique accelerating practice, when different types of particles accelerate with a break of several hours. Work on the modernization of the nuclotron is underway and there is very little time left until the next spring session." *** A working meeting was held at JINR, in which Advisor to the CERN Coordinator for External Relations T.Kurtyka, MLIT Deputy Director V.V.Korenkov, one of the leading specialists in information and computing systems (CERN) Professor D. Fergusson, Head of the Department of Programming Technology of Belarusian State University Professor A.N.Kurbatsky, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Director of the Scientific Centre for Research and Development of Information Systems and Head of the relevant JINR - CERN collaboration V.N.Shkundenkov took part. It was a short visit to discuss the programme for training students, graduate students and young specialists of JINR and Member States on the basis of an integrated administrative and management information complex developed at CERN (with the participation of JINR specialists). This complex allows one to effectively organize the management of large international projects, such as major experiments at LHC. Columnist Irina LEONOVICH
