On 30 May, 1973, after the repair and reconstruction had been completed, a pulse mode was carried out on IBR-30 and on 11 July, the reactor started operating for physical measurements.

Rudenko says, "Our plans for the reactor are to replace the outdated instrument and measuring fleet and to increase its reliable operation, to replace the components of the movable and fixed areas that were not replaced during the reactor shutdown and their design life has expired or is coming to an end. The primary task is to include computers in the reactor circuit, first, in the control mode and afterwards, in the active control. We hope that today, the Institute and the Laboratory will be able to allocate the required material resources for the successful completion of these critical activities aimed at improving the efficiency and safety of the reactor."

In the current 1973, the competition of three cities of the region Dubna, Zhukovsky and Kaliningrad for the best indicators in the production activities of collectives, household services, trade and public catering, in the improvement of cities started. On 27 July, delegations from Zhukovsky and Kaliningrad arrived in Dubna to determine which city had the best performance in the second quarter. The guests learnt about our city, the progress of its construction and improvement, visited some enterprises.

Having considered the results of the competition, the committee recognized the city of Zhukovsky as the winner in the second quarter. All industrial enterprises of this city have successfully completed the scheduled tasks.

Notable successes have been achieved by Dubna consumer services workers. The implementation of the plan for the volume of sales of household services amounted to 104.3 percent. In terms of household service, the first place was awarded to Dubna. In trade and catering, the first place was awarded to the city of Kaliningrad. In terms of improvement and utilities, the city of Zhukovsky has the best indicators. It was awarded the first place in rationalization and invention. Thus, the number of the first places was: Zhukovsky - three, Dubna and Kaliningrad - one each.

In 1965, the electrostatic generator EG-5 was launched at FLNP, capable of accelerating protons, deutons, helium-3 and helium-4 nuclei to energies of about 5 MeV.

At present, after eight years of operation of EG-5, one can quite definitely talk about the great role played by this modest "worker of science" in the development of nuclear physics research at JINR. The fact is that investigations of nuclear reactions with accelerated protons, daytons, helium ions being carried out on light nuclei are extremely important both for theoretical understanding of the interaction processes and for understanding the phenomena of astrophysics and meeting practical issues related to the production and application of nuclear energy.

In the stars of celestial space, in the energy reactor designed by man on Earth, processes of interaction between nuclei occur that can be simulated and the nature of these interactions can be investigated by accelerators for relatively low energies such as an electrostatic generator.

Inspector of the City Department of Public Education V.S.Afanasieva spoke about the results of the last academic year, about the tasks facing the school. "The scheduled task for schools to distribute graduates of 8 grades in 9 classes, technical schools and vocational schools for 1973,1975 years has been approved. So, out of 693 graduates of the 8th grade of 1973, 526 people entered the 9th grade, 59 - in technical schools, 95 - in vocational schools and schools of working youth. The results of 1973 showed that plans were implemented for schools and the city as a whole.

The teaching staff of the city did a lot of work in the past academic year. If the percentage of academic performance in the academic year 1970-1971 was 96.8 percent, in 1971-1972 - 96.95, then in 1972-1973 it amounted to 98.04 percent. Compared to the school year before last, the number of second-year students has decreased."

The championship of the Moscow Region in tennis was held in Podlipki. In these competitions, our team was the third. In personal competitions, two prizes were taken by Filippov from Dubna: the second place - in singles and the first - paired with the master of sports Zaitsev. The pair Golutvin - Karzhavin, that took the second place, beating a rather strong pair Enshtein - Petrovsky (also from Dubna) successfully performed at the competition. Currently, Dubna tennis players Golutvin, Karzhavin, Chuburkov and Semenova perform in Voronezh at the championship of the RSFSR. At the individual championship of the CC "Trud" that was held in Kaliningrad on 20 - 27 July, the team of the Moscow Region completely consisted of Dubna tennis players.

An important event will be the personal and team championship of the Joint Institute, in which employees of all JINR units will take part.

Yesterday, the third, last shift in the pioneer camp "Volga" started. And let the pioneers rest on this shift in such an interesting and easy way as the participants that share their impressions today.

"The days at the pioneer camp flew by quickly and cheerfully. But we especially remember 25 July. On this day, the detachment was preparing for Name Day of the celebrator. In the morning, they congratulated the birthday celebrators through a lightning newspaper. In the evening, the "newborns" were tested in the test room - a labor salon, a beauty salon, a flower salon and an art salon. A pioneer concert was given in honor of the birthday celebrators."
