The first postgraduate students of the JINR-based Departments

"On 7 September, 2023, a successful defense of the graduate qualifying papers of the postgraduate students of the Department of Nuclear Physics Materials Science of the Institute of Physics of Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University was held.

It is one of the JINR-based Departments at Russian universities, established in 2017. The first two postgraduate students of the Department Olga Lis and Bulat Bakirov have already been hired as junior researchers in the Group DN-12 of the Sector of Diffractometry of FLNP. The main scientific areas of the Group are investigation of the structural and magnetic properties of materials in extreme conditions and investigation of the internal structure of objects of cultural and natural heritage, properties of structural materials and industrial products.

Olga Lis presented her graduate qualifying thesis "Investigation of the crystalline, magnetic structure and vibrational spectra of layered quasi-two-dimensional magnetic materials with changes in temperature and pressure", carried out at FLNP JINR under the supervision of Dr. Physics and Mathematics Denis Kozlenko. The paper is dedicated to the investigation of the crystalline, magnetic structure and vibrational spectra of the compounds CrBr3 and Fe3GeTe2 using neutron, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The report focused on new phenomena observed under the impact of high pressure and low temperatures, as well as the structural mechanisms of their development.

"Modern algorithms for the analysis of neutron radiographic images and reconstruction of 3D data based on cultural heritage objects" is the topic of the paper presented at the defense by Bulat Bakirov. One of the important areas of the work carried out at FLNP under the supervision of Dr. Sc. Sergey Kichanov, was the development of the use of promising tomographic reconstruction algorithms from incomplete experimental data using convolutional neural networks. Among other things, the innovative approach will significantly reduce the time required to carry out experiments.

The JINR-based Department at KFU was established in 2017 and two years later, its first Master's students graduated. Four graduates of the Department's Master's programme currently work as research interns at FLNP, VBLHEP and FLNR. Two graduates of the Department, having completed their postgraduate studies this year, were hired at the Joint Institute as junior researchers.
