"In Dubna, a group of scientists carried out a theoretical review and received experimental confirmation of the possibility of constructing an accelerator based on the new principle of collective acceleration of charged particles. Estimates of the parameters of the accelerating system of such a facility show that its effectiveness significantly exceeds that currently achieved on operating accelerators. This is a new great success for scientists,” Academician N. N. Bogolyubov stated in his article on new acceleration techniques published in the newspaper “Izvestia”. “Calculations and experiments carried out at DNAT headed by V. P. Sarantsev showed: it is possible to create such a clot that will provide a spectacular strength of the accelerating electric field twenty times higher than that achievable on modern type accelerators... Experiments in Dubna continue. It is still difficult to predict all the possibilities of such an accelerator but even those that are already visible now - efficiency, the ability to measure particle energy within wide limits and accelerate ions of various types - make it unique. It explains the huge interest that physicists all over the world show in new promising research developing in Dubna."

JINR was visited by a delegation of Canadian accelerator specialists that were in the Soviet Union at the invitation of the State Committee for the Use of Atomic Energy.

The delegation included Professor F. Tunnicliffe, a senior researcher J. Freser, a researcher J. Ormrod. The Canadian scientists were welcomed by JINR Vice Director Professor H. Hristov. Later, they learnt about the operation of the DLNP synchrocyclotron and also examined the prototype of the relativistic cyclotron developed by the Department of New Accelerators.

LHEP Deputy Director I. N. Semenyushkin introduced the work of synchrophasotron and spoke about the experiments carried out on it.

The head of the delegation Professor Tunnicliffe, before leaving Dubna, said that the visit of Canadian scientists to the Joint Institute made a great impression on them.

"We are very grateful to Directorate of the Institute," Professor Tunnicliffe said, "As well as to those that helped us to learn about the Laboratories, for the very warm welcome that was given to us.

Collective gardening in our city began to develop in 1954. This year the first collective garden "Dubna" was organized in the city. Later, in 1956, the Michurinets garden appeared, then Zarya‑1, Zarya‑2, Druzhba and others. Currently, there are already 9 collective gardens in the city, about 200 hectares of land are occupied for gardens. There are about three thousand amateur gardeners. If we assume that 3‑4 people work in each garden plot, then in our gardens about 10 thousand people are engaged in useful work and active rest, and 5 thousand children receive labor education in them, they are instilled with a sense of love and a reasonable attitude to nature. This is perhaps one of the main advantages of collective gardening.

JINR Vice Director A. N. Sissakyan and Assistant Director for International Cooperation P. N. Bogolyubov returned from a business trip to Geneva. During the trip, they discussed with Heads of CERN issues of joint participation in the exhibition "Hadrons in medicine" that will open on 25 August in Oslo. Meetings were also held with a group of JINR employees at CERN, negotiations on cooperation in the exchange of scientific and educational programmes.

A. N. Sissakyan signed a Memorandum of Understanding between CERN, the hospital of the University of Geneva and JINR on the establishment of a scientific and practical centre for nuclear medicine on the basis of JINR and the Medical Unit 9. As a first step in this area, a gamma spectrometer will be donated from Geneva to Dubna for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with radioisotopes. This programme involves extensive international cooperation with the participation of FLNR, DLNP, FLNP, DRBR of JINR, the Medical Unit 9 and a number of centres in Russia and Switzerland.

At a meeting of the JINR STC, a resolution was adopted to support the nomination for the State Prize by the Scientific Council of the St. Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences of a series of investigations carried out in 1977‑1996 "Muon catalysis of nuclear fusion reactions and its applications". JINR staff also includes Professor S. S. Gershtein, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor V. P. Dzhelepov, Professor V. G. Zinov, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics V. V. Filchenkov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor L. I. Ponomarev.

At the stadium in the old Volga channel, water skiing competitions were held as part of the Dubna Open Championship. For the first time, the Cup named after Honored Master of Sports Natalya Rumyantseva in figure skating on water skiing was played. The competition was attended by young athletes from the Dubna water skiing school, the Moscow water skiing club "Alpha" and the N. Rumyantseva Club in Krylatskoye. The most remarkable event of the tournament, of course, was the performance of the very star of world, European and Russian water skiing - multiple champion and record holder of the world, Europe, the USSR and Russia Natalia Rumyantseva. At the grand opening of the competition, Mayor of Dubna V. E. Prokh presented the sign of the Honorary Citizen of the city to an outstanding athlete that for many years glorified the name of our city in many countries of the world.
