Using powerful accelerators that provide beams of charged particles with an energy of many billions of electron volts, the physicists obtain important information about the nature of nuclear forces, about the structure of protons and neutrons, about the occurrence and properties of previously unknown particles. To study various nuclear reactions under the impact of accelerated particles, the scientists of the Institute develop special facilities, bubble and diffusion chambers that allow photographic registration of the results of these reactions.

Since 1956, a group of employees headed by V. I. Moskalev began working on the development of a high‑pressure diffusion chamber in a magnetic field in the nuclear power plant. The facility was constructed, adjusted and with its help investigations of the interaction of negative pi‑mesons with hydrogen, as well as rare types of decay of pi‑zero‑mesons and electronic decay of pi‑inus‑mesons started.

To obtain accurate data about the emitted processes, the group received more than one hundred thousand photographs. A lot of hard and painstaking work was required from laboratory assistants‑viewers L. I. Krasnoslobodtseva, T. S. Sazhneva, Yu. L. Saykina...

The results of these investigations were reported this year at the International Conference on High Energy Particle Physics (Rochester).

Most recently, the scientists and employees of the Institute have received a wonderful gift - the Central Scientific and Technical Library in the new BLTP building.

Immediately from the lobby, you are entering a cozy room with a wide bright window - this is a subscription. At the stands - an exhibition of scientific, technical and social and political literature received in a week. One of the stands is still empty, yet new books will soon appear here. In the next room, the reader can select the required literature using catalogs and file cabinets of journal articles. Reference literature is in the room next door. From both rooms you can go to a beautiful reading room. Comfortable chairs, round tables and special desks, soft lighting - all this creates excellent conditions for classes. The coffee room also attracts visitors. On the shelves, here are sets of magazines for the current year, published in many languages of the world. Magazines arrive every day, the latest ones laid out on tables. Conveniently made and three‑tier book depository, numbering about 40 thousand copies. Library staff currently carry out a lot of work on compiling a consolidated catalog.

21 August marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of Academician Nikolay Nikolaevich Bogolyubov. The fact that Dubna was and is a leader in a number of topical areas of particle physics, the atomic nucleus and the condensed matter is largely due to Director of the Institute (1965‑1988) N. N. Bogolyubov, the main generator of many scientific ideas that boldly supported a number of new research areas. The International Bogolyubov Conference "Problems of Theoretical and Mathematical Physics" will be dedicated to the development of the scientist's creative heritage. The grand opening of the Conference, organized by JINR and the Russian Academy of Sciences, will be held on 27 September at Moscow State University.

JINR was visited by Professor Thomas Joseph Le Compt, one of the leaders of the CDF spectrometric complex modernization programme at the FNAL tevatron. He learnt about the Dubna work on the construction of large (up to 3.2 meters long) scintillation meters for a new, so-called muon trigger CDF that is necessary in the experiments of a new generation in the physics of heavy quarks, the search for Higgs particles, others. This work is underway in DLNP by the group of I. E. Chirikov‑Zorin within the framework of a project led by Professor Yu. A. Budagov at JINR. The project is carried out in close cooperation with INFN (Pisa), FNAL (USA), the University in Bratislava and other research centres.
