Dubna schoolchildren are discovering the secrets of ancient sciences

A scientific school for high school students in Dubna on the basis of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of the Arab Republic of Egypt was held on 5 – 9 April in Cairo. Its tasks include career guidance for Dubna schoolchildren, learning about the scientific centres of Egypt, the range of research carried out in ARE.

Egyptian students of the Children's University at the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt have already come to Dubna five times to participate in scientific schools organized by the JINR UC. These schools are held to introduce high school students the laboratories and facilities of the Institute, the research carried out on them. JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov proposed organizing a response mission so that Dubna schoolchildren could learn about the research capabilities of ARE. This idea was implemented in the University Centre.

Five schools of the city (Lyceum "Dubna", Lyceum named after V. G. Kadyshevsky, Lyceum No. 6, Gymnasium No. 8 and Secondary School No. 5) delegated 14 tenth graders for competitive selection for a trip to Egypt. Competitive events were held on the basis of the UC and consisted of four types of tests: experimental work in physics, a test for general erudition in the field of natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, in the development of the content of team competitions and essays on the mission in Egypt. In three of them, applicants needed to demonstrate competencies in the field of communications in English. The organizers are JINR employees Marina Donets, Pavel Luchinin, Vladislav Tyulkin and Petr Shirkov.

According to the results of the marathon, ten students were selected. In Egypt, they visited the National Research Centre, where they learnt about physical and chemical laboratories, took part in experiments of the Sector of Spectrometry. They also met their Egyptian peers. In a comprehensive school, Dubna high school students held an intellectual marathon with Egyptian students in science, mathematics and computer science, held a master class on physical experiments and took part in mixed teams in a scientific quiz. Also, the students visited a large agrotechnical complex SEKEM, where they learnt about the latest agricultural technologies in a desert climate. Dubna high school students also learned about the culture of Egypt by visiting the new Grand Egyptian Museum and pyramids in Giza.

The School became the first visiting event for schoolchildren in the city in many years, organized by JINR in the Member State of the Institute.
