About what the newspaper wrote on this day 42 years agoNo. 87 (2480), 27 November, 1979 The Laboratory of Neutron Physics works hard to prepare the IBR-2 reactor for power startup. Along with this work, the first-stage physics facilities for implementing research on the new reactor are currently completed. Work is also intensively underway on the construction of the second-stage experimental facilities. The laboratory's research staffs, together with a number of institutes from JINR Member States, also develop new physics projects. One of these, discussed at the recent 30th meeting of the Neutron Physics Committee, is called DIFRAN. *** The 9th Symposium on Fast Neutron-Nucleus Interactions opened in Gaussig, East Germany. Reports were made on the research of fast neutron-nucleus interactions at institutes in the USSR, West Germany and Austria, as well as on experiments studying the interaction of neutrons with gamma rays, alpha particles and protons. The theoretical description of isobaric analog states of nuclei and experimental automation were also discussed. Six JINR staff members presented papers at the Symposium. 27 years agoNo. 45 (3434), 27 November, 1998
*** A meeting of the Russia-CERN Cooperation Committee was held in Geneva. The Russian delegation was headed by Russian Minister of Science and Technology Academician M.P.Kirpichnikov and CERN Director-General Professor K.Llewellyn-Smith. The results of the collaboration and outlined plans were comprehensively discussed at the meeting. Academician M.P.Kirpichnikov stated that collaboration with CERN is a priority for Russian science. For example, the DELPHI facility was developed with the active participation of physicists from Dubna. JINR researcher A.G.Olshevsky gave a detailed report on the scientific programme of experiments for this project. A meeting of the joint JINR-CERN Scientific Cooperation Committee was held under the chairmanship of J.Allaby and A.N.Sissakyan. The heads of all joint experiments delivered reports. CERN Director-General K. Llewellyn-Smith and JINR Director V.G.Kadyshevsky participated in the meeting. The results and plans for cooperation were reviewed and the issues of attracting new partners from scientific centres of the JINR and CERN Member States to joint work were discussed. *** For the second time this autumn, the IBR-2 reactor has been brought up to power. A busy summer has come to an end, during which reactor personnel spent scheduled maintenance and unique unscheduled bypass operations in the IBR-2 gas supply system, while FLNP and JINR Directorates scrambled to secure funding for these operations. To get the autumn experimental cycles underway, Directorate and the primary users of IBR-2 have worked hard. Today marks the conclusion of the November cycle, during which researchers from JINR and Germany took advantage of the capabilities of IBR-2. *** A regular meeting was held on JINR's collaboration with German scientific centres. The participants commented on the current status and prospects for further collaboration, as defined by the agreement between JINR and the German Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology. Professor J.Friese, Technical University of Munich, "The project we currently work on with our Dubna colleagues involves compressing and heating nuclear matter and studying phase transitions and the behavior of hadrons in extreme states at high pressures and high intensities. Dubna specialists prepare a high-resolution detector for these experiments. The decisive contribution here belongs to the JINR LSHE specialists from Professor Yu.V.Zanevsky's group." *** The JINR Publishing Department prepares to publish M.G.Shafranova's book "Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Information and Biographical Handbook". Here, readers will find brief information about the Institute's history, laboratories, as well as the achievements and discoveries of its staff. It contains over 500 short biographical profiles of scientists and staff members, a list of JINR-related literature and other useful information. Columnist Irina LEONOVICH
