Photo exhibition opened for the 100th anniversary of Yury Shcherbakov
On 13 August, the Cultural Centre "Mir" hosted the opening of a photo exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding scientist, professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Yury Shcherbakov, an experimental physicist that had worked for more than 40 years at the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems and for many years had held the post of Chief Scientific Secretary of the Institute.
The exposition covers the key stages of the life and scientific activity of Yury Shcherbakov - from school years and the front line to participation in major international projects and work for the benefit of science and the city of Dubna.
JINR Deputy Director RAS Academician Vladimir Kekelidze, DLNP Director Evgeny Yakushev, FLNR Scientific Leader Academician Yuri Oganessian, Director of the SIM Office Andrey Tamonov, as well as the colleagues, friends and relatives of the scientist greeted the guests.
"People of that time returned from the war and learned to live anew. We studied side by side: they came from the front and we - from the school bench," Yuri Oganessian said, recalling the generation which Yury Shcherbakov belonged to. "Yuri Alexandrovich was remembered by me as an extremely versatile and talented person, very intelligent."
The scientist's son Yaroslav Shcherbakov emphasized, "My father was a man of literally encyclopedic knowledge, he wore books from the library in a grid. A lot I know is from him. For us, he was a real example both in work and in family life. He managed to do everything."
"I worked with him only for a year. It was he that took me to work and I believe that I was very lucky. He was a bright, fond person with a constant desire for knowledge. He taught me and my colleagues to stand up for our opinions and to defend our interests. He will live forever in my memory and in the memory of those that worked with him," a colleague of Yury Shcherbakov Tamara Ivashkevich recalled.
According to Head of the DLNP Scientific Communications Group Elena Dubovik, the inspiration for holding an exhibition was the son's love for his father and the desire to tell his story to people.
Yaroslav Shcherbakov, answering a question about personal memories concerning the exposition, stated, "Half of the exhibition consists of photographs of people whom I know, relatives. Our lives are captured here. Pictures of my parents are especially dear to me, they remind me of the days spent together."
Rare photographs, personal belongings, documents and awards of Yury Shcherbakov, allowing to evaluate the breadth of his activities and achievements in science are presented in the exposition. Over the years of scientific work, he had made a significant contribution to the development of nuclear physics research, to the development of unique equipment and to the strengthening of international scientific cooperation.
The school of specialists in the field of hadron-nuclear interaction established by him successfully carried out investigations in a number of JINR Member States and his lectures and organizational work contributed to the training of a whole generation of young scientists.
Yury Shcherbakov will forever live in the memory of colleagues, friends and residents of Dubna as a talented scientist, innovator, active social activist and a person of great vital energy.
