Science projects and school lessons

On 27 – 28 August, the All‑Russian Congress of Physics Teachers was held at the Sirius University (Sirius Federal Territory). At the plenary session of the Congress, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov made a report on the educational and methodological complex of textbooks for the basic and in‑depth study of physics at the school. He announced the introduction of a basic physics textbook for 10th grades a year later in schools throughout Russia. Translated into English, this textbook will also be available for students in schools of JINR Member States.

Academician Grigory Trubnikov, Scientific Leader of the project to publish basic physics textbooks in grades 10‑11, emphasized that the training of highly qualified personnel is an important part of JINR's mission as a major scientific centre. "We focus on working with schoolchildren and teachers of physics and mathematics. The main task of our work with teachers is to unite major scientific projects with school lessons. It is necessary to show the student that physics is not an abstraction, but a living, dynamic science, and the key to motivation to engage in this subject is visibility, in the ability to "touch" science. A teacher that has seen with his or her own eyes the current facilities at the Kurchatov Institute, in Novosibirsk, in Dubna, tells students about the basics of this science in a completely different way," Grigory Trubnikov said.

About 10 years ago, the employees of the JINR University Centre (UC) began developing a training and methodological complex for grades 7‑9 of the advanced level "Physics. Engineers of the future". Today, the complex includes a textbook, an exercise book, a problem book, a practice book, as well as a website with a large number of additional materials.

"We presented this training and methodological complex to Russian President Vladimir Putin two years ago and secured his support. Today, the textbook is used in engineering classes in dozens of regions of the Russian Federation," Grigory Trubnikov said. For several years, together with physics teachers, methodology, teaching technologies, tools, texts and online support were debugged. The textbook "Physics. Engineers of the future" became the basis for starting, on the instructions of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, to write a basic version textbook for grades 10‑11 and later - for grades 7‑9. In parallel, a textbook is currently developed for institutions of secondary vocational education. By 1 September, 2027, all schools in Russia should be equipped with these physics textbooks for the 10th grade, and a year later, the schools will be provided with a textbook for the 11th grade. In addition, basic textbooks will be translated into English and will become available to schoolchildren of the JINR Member States.

In the text of the textbook, focus is on instilling a grain of motivation in students - in particular, to remind readers that the laws of physics are the basis of high technologies and to maintain the interest of schoolchildren throughout the course. There is so much material that can be studied that the format of the textbook alone does not allow you to tell about everything. Therefore, an important role in training is played by the support site of the training and methodological complex with interactive sections: a virtual research workshop, an electronic application, videos about modern science, methodological cases and a teacher lesson designer. "The textbook was developed by our whole professional community. We regularly hold methodological conferences in Dubna, which pedagogical universities are actively engaged in," Grigory Trubnikov said.

Head of the Department for the Development of Educational Programmes of the UC, Head of the team of authors for the development of school physics textbooks Yury Panebrattsev, in his report at the plenary session of the Congress, highlighted the main results of the implementation of the textbook for grades 7‑9 "Physics. Engineers of the future". He recalled that in 2026, the tasks of the training and methodological complex "Physics. Engineers of the future" for grades 7 and 8 were published in the Publishing House "Prosveshcheniye", including a large number of engineering tasks; a 9‑grade problem book will be printed. Head of the team highlighted that there is a request from teachers to graduate from training and methodological complex in an in‑depth programmer for high school. The physics-engineers.ru support site of the training and methodological complex, developed in cooperation with Rosatom State Corporation and NRNU MEPhI, is widely used by teachers. The service contains an extensive library of digital educational resources, methodological support, a lesson designer and access to it is open to everyone. Professor Yu. Panebrattsev emphasized that the guidelines and after‑school planning posted on the site are also relevant for teachers that work with the traditional Peryshkin textbook. The task for the near future, Yury Panebrattsev emphasized, is to find resources to create a similar website for a basic level textbook, as well as to increase the number of laboratory work and research projects to prepare an engineering level.

Also, both speakers from JINR focused on the fact that even to study physics at the basic level, it is necessary to introduce the third hour of training in the subject per week in order not only to learn about the theory fluently, but also to have time to carry out experimental work and to solve problems.

Grigory Trubnikov and Yury Panebrattsev expressed gratitude to colleagues from NRNU MEPhI, MIPT, MSU, MSPU, Smolensk State University, Tomsk and Tula, Trans‑Baikal State Pedagogical Universities, Dubna University, the Institute of Content and Teaching Methods for help in creating a basic level textbook, as well as teachers and methodologists of physical and mathematical schools that have taken an active part in its approbation. Separately, they thanked Directorate of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Publishing House "Prosveshcheniye" for their support.

The members of the JINR delegation did not speak only at the plenary session. A leading researcher at the UC Ivan Lomachenkov spoke at the section "Physical experiment at school" about laboratory and design work in physics in an in‑depth school course. A software engineer at VBLHEP Pavel Semchukov and a junior researcher at VBLHEP Nikita Lashmanov, as well as the leading developer of InterGraphics LLC Evgeny Dolgy presented the master class "Laws of physics and advanced technologies" to teachers and school administrators.
