School-Conference in Minsk: exchange of ideas and results
On 25 - 31 August, Minsk hosted the XVI International School-Conference "Current Problems of Microcosm Physics". The organizers were the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, the Institute of Nuclear Problems of the Belarusian State University, B.I.Stepanov Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
The goal of the event is to build a platform for the exchange of ideas and scientific results, as well as to involve students and graduate students in work in key research areas. This year, the School-Conference was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.
At the opening ceremony, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Republic of Belarus, Chairman of the State Committee for Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus Sergey Shlychkov, Advisor to Directorate of the People's Republic of Belarus Nikolay Rusakovich, First Vice-Rector of Belarusian State University Dmitry Kurlovich, Director of the Research Institute for Nuclear Problems of the Belarusian State University Sergey Maksimenko addressed the participants. Sergey Shlychkov highlighted that the Conference is interesting for both scientists implementing basic research and manufacturers of specialized equipment for NICA and other scientific projects, the VBLHEP chief researcher Richard Lednicky expressed confidence that the event traditionally helps young scientists to find their way in science.
On 26 August, the plenary session of the event was opened by a lecture of JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov "Future experiments in the field of high energy physics". After that, the report of FLNR Deputy Scientific Leader Mikhail Itkis "Superheavy elements: present and future" was given. The JINR Conference was also attended by the VBLHEP Chief Researcher Richard Lednicky that reported on the status and plans of the BM@N experiment at the NICA Accelerator Complex, Head of the VBLHEP Sector Oleg Rogachevsky that introduced the physical programme of the MPD experiment and Head of the ARIADNA-NICA collaboration Oleg Belov that spoke about the capabilities of the Accelerator Complex in the field of applied applications. Reports were presented by LRB Director Alexander Bugay, MLIT Scientific Leader Vladimir Korenkov, MLIT Deputy Director for Research Nikolay Voytishin and by other employees of the Institute's laboratories.
The programme of the School-Conference covers a wide range of areas of modern physics: the latest experimental results of world accelerator centres, research projects of future experiments in the field of high energy physics, accelerated physics, astrophysics and cosmology, new approaches in quantum field theory. Separate sections are dedicated to radiobiology and nuclear medicine, nuclear electronics and detectors, current trends in materials science, data processing and facility design.
The School-Conference is a leading platform in Belarus for discussing current issues of particle physics, theoretical physics and nuclear physics technologies.
The first School-Conference on topical problems of microcosm physics was held in Belarus in 1971. The main organizer of the first three schools (1971-1977) from the Belarusian side was Academician Fedor Fedorov, one of the founders of the traditions of theoretical physics in Belarus. The council of scientific consultants of the School at that time was headed by Academician Nikolay Bogolyubov and Professor Nikolay Shumeyko played a key role in reviving the tradition of holding schools (1997-2015).
Since 2018, the tradition of holding schools has been developed by an updated programme committee headed by Professor Sergey Maksimenko. The membership of lecturers has significantly increased due to the active involvement of leading foreign scientists. The School programme currently includes new research areas relevant to Belarus.
