"The Canal of Memory"

On 21 January, the travelling exhibition "The Moscow Canal - the Canal of Memory" was opened in the central department of the Family Reading Library.

The organizers of the exhibition, the initiative group of the "Canal of Memory" Project told the audience about the cultural, scientific and technological achievements of the Moscow Canal, about the course of its construction, as well as about the personalities of its participants. At what price was the canal built? Who were its builders? Today, we are trying to get answers to these and other questions by paying tribute to the memory of these people.

The audience learned not only about the achievements, but also about the trials that the builders of the canal, the prisoners of Dmitlag had been subjected to. The opening of the exposition was complemented by a performance-reading letters from prisoners to the writer Maksim Gorky. In the hope of a review of their case, the canal prisoners had written letters to the proletarian writer. The piercing lines from these letters were read out to the audience in the performance-reading.

Many people that came to the meeting not only learnt about the exposition, but also shared their memories, stories from family archives concerning the era of canal construction over a cup of tea. We thank all the participants and organizers of the meeting and we are looking forward to further cooperation!
