Modernized supercomputer "Govorun"

On Monday, at the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies, within the framework of the Autumn School on Information Technologies of JINR, the opening of the supercomputer "Govorun" after the modernization took place. After the modernization the supercomputer achieved an increase of 32 percent in operating rate or 202 teraflops, as well as an increase in memory. The event was attended by JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov, JINR Vice-Director Latchesar Kostov, JINR Scientific Leader Victor Matveev and representatives of partners - the RSC group.

"Today, we have two significant events," MLIT Director V.V.Korenkov told the Institute's media. "This is the opening of a Student School that has been attended by a lot of students from 13 Russian universities. They are aimed at completing their diploma papers on the topics of our Institute and we will do our best to make them join our team or stay with us in their regions. The second event that we are also very happy about is the modernization of our supercomputer "Govorun". Its computing power has increased with the supplementation of 32 ultra-modern units, each of which has a large number of cores with large ultra-fast RAM. The second thing that has been implemented is the purchase and installation of 8 flash arrays for dealing with large amounts of data. One such compact unit is 1 petabyte of storage that just a few years ago would have been a closet full of disk servers. It develops an environment where our tasks can use hierarchical memory. Such modernization allows to organize efficient data processing for all tasks that are met at our Institute: for the NICA project, in quantum chromodynamics on lattices, radiation biology, the usage of quantum computing for simulation of superheavy elements, as well as of calculations of a novel neutron reactor and many other tasks."

"We have been supplying our advanced solutions for the needs of the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies since 2017, helping to establish a supercomputer centre here," General Director of the RSK group A.A.Moskovsky said. "Our cooperation, on the one hand, allows us to implement the most advanced solutions that we have and on the other hand, helps to develop science. We offer technological developments in layout, design, we have a unique liquid cooling system for servers of supercomputers, an advanced solution for high-performance storage systems, probably, the best in managing computing systems of this scale and this all ensures the efficient operation of the laboratory."

The supercomputer "Govorun" uses a range of unique storage system offerings that occupy leading positions in Russia and the ones of the best in the world in terms of working with metadata, in terms of a hierarchical storage system. It uses energy-efficient solutions and today, energy efficiency is very significant for all high-performance systems and Govorun has introduced a liquid cooling system that ensures this energy efficiency. It is a compact system that saves space in the data processing centre, allowing a large system to fit into a small space. We are very pleased with our cooperation with MLIT JINR.
