Students of MSU branch in Dubna got acquainted with MLIT
On 1 September, the Dubna branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University welcomed master’s students of the new course entitled “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science” (program “Data Processing Methods and Technologies in Heterogeneous Computing Environments”). On 2 September, within acquaintance with the Institute’s scientific infrastructure, the students of the IT course together with students enrolled for the Physics course this year visited the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies.
Accompanied by MLIT researcher Igor Pelevanyuk, the students visited the JINR Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex (MICC), became aware of how its work from the architecture to the monitoring of the engineering infrastructure is organized, and got acquainted with the structure of the “Govorun” supercomputer. In addition, the guys learned about the Laboratory’s history and how computing technology has developed from the second half of the 20th century to the present day. During the tour, Igor Pelevanyuk answered a variety of questions from the students.
In total, this year, based on the results of entrance exams for the course “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science”, 10 master’s students were enrolled within state-funded quotas, and three more received fee-based quotas. Among them are graduates of the State Technical University of Gomel, Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Russian Technological University MIREA, North Ossetian State University (NOSU) and Dubna University.
Alexey Chubov, a graduate of Far Eastern Federal University, shared his impressions and expectations of the upcoming studies: “I would like to deal with advanced cloud technologies on the JINR MICC computing cluster and take part in processing data from physics experiments. I would also be interested in working at the intersection of information technology and biological research. I chose the master’s course in Dubna since JINR offers a very wide range of opportunities.”
Viktor Surzhko from the town of Kimry graduated from Dubna University and previously participated in the JINR IT School: “At the School, we were introduced to JINR’s various Laboratories and scientific tasks, and it was so fascinating that my eyes just lit up. Amazing people work here. As a result, I turned to Vladimir Vasilievich Korenkov as a scientific supervisor on the topic of monitoring the MICC engineering infrastructure. This is a very interesting task with great potential for its development.”
Maria Khvostova graduated from the bachelor’s degree program at NRNU MEPhI: “Today was a very interesting excursion and I am sure that later on there will be much that is new and informative. I would like to express my gratitude to the organizers of all these events. I hope to spend these two years as productively as possible. I am interested in machine learning tasks applied to text and natural language processing. I previously participated in the JINR IT School, and this year I was lucky enough to present my results at the GRID’2025 conference. This experience left me with extremely positive impressions of JINR as a serious scientific organization and of the Laboratory of Information Technologies as a part of it. I am very glad that I managed to enter the MSU master’s course in Dubna, this is a chance to gain experience and knowledge from leading experts.”
The whole first week of studies is devoted to immersion in JINR’s scientific areas and visits to basic experimental facilities. The students are getting acquainted with the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems (DLNP), the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics (VBLHEP) and the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics (FLNP). An overview lecture at the JINR University Center and a quest around Dubna were also organized for the students.
Let us recall that in 2024, for the first time in its recent history, the branch enrolled first-year master’s students. Due to its high relevance and in accordance with the branch’s development plans, at the end of the same year there was made a decision to introduce a new program entitled “Data Processing Methods and Technologies in Heterogeneous Computing Environments”. The branch, organized at JINR’s initiative, reflects the Institute’s multidisciplinary nature and is intended to correspond to the wide range of its research areas. Graduates of the Dubna branch will receive MSU higher education diplomas in Russian and English.
