JINR discussed issues of scientific cooperation with China

On 28 March, representatives of the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS) and the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the People’s Republic of China (ASIPP) visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The delegation discussed issues of scientific cooperation and joint participation in international projects with the JINR Directorate. As part of the visit programme, Chinese representatives got acquainted with the progress of work on the construction of the NICA Accelerator Complex.

Vice President of the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science Yuntao Song expressed interest in developing cooperation and reaching a new level of partnership with JINR. Speaking of the most promising areas for joint research, he highlighted accelerator technology, superconducting magnets, neutron physics, nuclear and radiation medicine, and radiobiology.

JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov spoke about the successful experience of cooperation between the Institute’s scientists and the ?hinese colleagues in international projects.

“For almost ten years, on the territory of the People’s Republic of China, JINR representatives have been actively participating in the JUNO and Daya Bay experiments researching the properties of neutrinos. In addition, together with the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHEP), research is underway at the BEPC (Beijing Electron Positron Collider). Specialists from China’s research centres work at the NICA Megascience Project and other projects in neutrino and reactor physics. JINR is always ready to invite specialists from China for joint research at the Institute’s facilities. JINR scientists have extensive experience in radiation medicine. The project of the MSC-230 superconducting isochronous proton cyclotron project for radiation flash therapy is currently under implementation. The Joint Institute is ready to assist in the development of new equipment for radiobiological research, work with isotopes, and photonuclear reactions research in the interests of nuclear medicine,” Grigory Trubnikov said.

The Director stressed the importance of establishing partnerships between JINR and large Chinese research centres and laboratories.

As part of the visit’s working programme, representatives of the JINR leadership and members of the delegation took part in a workshop to discuss issues related to the organization of a meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Research Infrastructure, which will take place in Dubna in the summer of 2024.

At the Laboratory of High Energy Physics, the delegation members got acquainted with the progress in the implementation of the NICA Megascience Project. The guests visited the experimental hall of the MPD Detector and the factory for the production of superconducting magnets.

The discussions and the visit overall yielded a better understanding for both sides regarding the extensive prospects for scientific cooperation, and the scientific and organizational approaches available to make it a reality.
