Start up and commissioning works to launch the synchrophasotron required enormous effort, great scientific and technical knowledge and initiative from the LHE team. The hard work was crowned with success - in April, the accelerator was launched and the calculated proton energy of 10 billion electron volts was achieved. Summing up the results of the first stage of work on the accelerator, it is necessary to note the great merits of the Director of the Veksler Laboratory and of such specialists as Petukhov, Pavlov, Kazansky, Chekhlov, Esin, Kryukov and many others. Currently, the second stage of work on the synchrophasotron is underway - bringing it to regular operating conditions and preparing equipment to carry out research.

Much fruitful research work was carried out by the DLNP team (Director - Dzhelepov). At the session of the Scientific Council of the Institute, scientific papers carried out by the employees of the sectors supervised by Dzhelepov, Meshcheryakov and Pontecorvo were highly appreciated. During 1957, 70 publications about the scientific achievements of the laboratory were sent to press and major methodological developments were carried out to develop new instruments and equipment.

The BLTP team (Director - Bogolyubov) not only carries out its work in well-known areas, but also puts forward new ideas, poses and meets new problems of nuclear physics. In a short period of time, employees prepared about 50 scientific papers for publication. Particularly noteworthy is the work of N. N. Bogolyubov on the theory of superconductivity. The autonomous adjustment of the electronic computer "Ural" has been completed. It should be put into operation in the first quarter of next year. In this laboratory, as in others, our scientists work in creative collaboration with scientists from people's democracies and there are already the first joint results.

FLNR (Director - Flerov) has been established recently and is designed to overcome the backlog in the artificial production of sauranium elements and the investigation of their properties. Until today, the bottleneck in laboratories has been the insufficient capacity of mechanical workshops that produce instruments and installations for conducting scientific and experimental work. Workshop teams headed by Comr. Potapov and Baicher, consist of experienced, highly qualified specialists, they work harmoniously, but they cannot always fulfill all orders from the scientific sectors in a timely manner.

This year, the team of the Bolshevolzhsky district of hydraulic structures (Head - Onoprienko) has worked much better than last year. Over the past 11 months, the annual electricity generation plan has been significantly exceeded. The locking plan has been completed by 108 percent and 3.5 million rubles of excess savings have been gained. For high production indicators and good maintenance of the equipment, the Ivankovskaya hydroelectric power station (Head - Gorbachev) was awarded the title of the best hydroelectric station of the Moscow canal.

The largest group of workers in our city are builders that carry out large and extremely necessary work in both industrial and residential construction. From year to year, the volume of work they carry out increases significantly. To date, 9 thousand square meters of living space have been commissioned, a kindergarten - for 125 places, a nursery - for 110 places, a store, a gym for school No. 3. 3 more permanent houses and 10 panel houses with an area of 4300 sq. m. are currently prepared for delivery and there is no doubt that they will soon be commissioned.

A lot of work to serve the city population has been carried out by the administrative and economic management departments. Today, 410 apartments have been gasified; there is complete confidence that in 1958, gasification of the entire central district of the city will be completed.
