Young scientists from South Africa
on an internship at JINR

On 7 June, the second stage of the International Student Practice of the JINR University Centre started at JINR. 28 young scientists came from the South African Republic to participate in the internship.

The International Student Practice in JINR Fields of Research lasts three weeks. The aim of the internship is to attract young talented people to the Institute, build their awareness of the opportunities provided by JINR as well as the research conducted here, and help them develop new skills. A distinctive feature of the internship is the participation of students in real scientific research at JINR to carry out final projects.

During the first week of the internship, the trainees are going to learn more about JINR. They will listen to educational lectures on the history, facilities, and achievements of the Institute. In addition, they will visit the “JINR Main Facilities” exhibition, as well as go on excursions to the laboratories. The participants will go on a guided tour to Moscow as part of the cultural programme. The next two weeks will be devoted to the project activities of young scientists in JINR laboratories. The topic area of the projects carried out by the trainees under the supervision of JINR scientists covers theoretical physics, life sciences, radiology, computing. At the end of the internship, the trainees will defend their projects.

“This practice has been held since 2007 and has already become traditional. In recent years it has taken place in two stages. During the first stage, young scientists from South Africa take part in a Summer School in their country, at iThemba LABS. It also lasts three weeks, and JINR specialists read lectures there both online and in person. Therefore, young scientists who come to Dubna are much better prepared and motivated already. During the second stage, the participants of the internship carry out small student projects which are aimed at getting acquainted with the scientific work conducted at JINR. The highlight of the current practice is that 9 students, which is a third of all those who came, chose the UC Engineering Training as a project. Some of them will be engaged in work with electronics, the others are going to work with automation and vacuum technology. It is also pleasant that our trainees will study in a new, well-equipped UC building”, JINR University Centre Director Dmitry Kamanin said.

The practice will last until 23 June. The working language of the event is English.
